FTP Protocol uses control connection (to send/receive FTP commands, username and password) and data connections (to transfer files and directory listings). Normally both connections haven't any encryption and anyone who has a physical access to network lines potentially can catch username with password and access your FTP account. To protect your information from prohibited access it's necessary to encrypt control (and optionally data) connection. The best way is to use a standard Secure Socket Layer (SSL) protocol that also uses to protect all Internet payments.
